Some info about this is at http://selvedgeyard.com/2011/11/17/1965-the-year-richard-petty-the-king-of-nascar-turned-drag-racer/

The photo above was printed in June of 1965. We can suppose the photo was taken in May or June.

On Feb 28th, 1965, his Barracuda veered off the track, into the crowd, and a young spectator was killed.

From the Selvedge Yard.com article   "Reports say that Richard Petty walked away from the wreck cussing the car that he now hated– saying over and over, “I’ll never drag race again”. Many cash offers were made for the twisted wreckage– but Petty flatly refused. True to his word– he was determined that no one would ever see it, let alone have it, again."

    1. You're right of course, I was thinking of the part from that same Selvedge Yard article "Reports say that Richard Petty walked away from the wreck cussing the car that he now hated– saying over and over, “I’ll never drag race again”. Many cash offers were made for the twisted wreckage– but Petty flatly refused. True to his word– he was determined that no one would ever see it, let alone have it, again."

  2. They hauled the car straight to the Petty compound, past the shops, back in the woods where it was buried.

During construction in recent years on the Petty property, the Barracuda was dug back up along with other old race cars that had been buried behind the shops.
