trains with tires, huh

it is one of four Paris subway lines that use these tires for quieter operation, this one has some overground stations. On front and behind the main wheels, you can see horizontal wheels that are used for traction. This system was developed to make the coaches more comfortable and quieter.

  1. Speaking of personal experience, they're really nice to ride: Silent when rolling into the station, silent when going at speed. Havn't been to paris for years, so I don't know if they're still using them.

This is an old pictures (the system first appeared in 1950) but is still in use nowadays.

  3. Just like Montreal today, much quieter and smoother, and I bet lower maintaince. Clean and impressive compared to the NYC slum they call a subway.

  4. Sorry - The horizontal wheel are not for traction, those are there for guiding the train down the guidway kind of like a really long game of bowling with bumpers. Nearly every airport that has an Automated-People-Mover uses that same concept. I've never seen pneumatic tires on one though, that is very truly unique.
